Promoting Ecuadorian sports through an autonomous Secretariat was the offer made this Thursday by the President of the Republic, Lenín Moreno. This new entity, according to the President, embraces a suggestion from "hundreds of athletes".
The announcement was made at the Carondelet Palace, during the halftime of the inaugural match of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, in a meeting held with children from sports schools of the Ministry of Sports, and a delegation of national athletes who excelled in the recent edition of the South American Games held in Cochabamba, Bolivia, to whom he presented awards for achieving a total of 94 medals, including 25 gold medals, 17 silver medals, and 52 bronze medals.
"We will have an independent Secretariat, separate from the Ministry of Education, because the tasks it carries out are completely different. (The athletes) will have an autonomous Secretariat, which will be able to carry out all its activities independently and will fulfill its task of providing support for sports," stated the president.
Moreno clarified that the country is "not in the best economic moment", but emphasized "that we will spare no expenses so that you (athletes) achieve the necessary successes".
The new entity is presented as an alternative to the absorption of the Ministry of Sports by the Ministry of Education, a step announced in April, as a measure aimed at optimizing State resources. (D)
