The forward Fernando Torres, who played his last game for Atlético Madrid on Sunday, in which he scored two goals against Eibar (2-2), said in his farewell tribute that he "never" needed any title to feel "the most loved player in the world".
"I never needed any title to feel like the most loved player in the world", said the forward in an emotional speech during the tribute ceremony for his departure from the club, in which he received the gold and diamond insignia, in front of a giant shirt with signatures for him and with a balloon on his back that read "See you soon, Fernando".
After being honored by his teammates, his discoverer Manuel Briñas, his first coach Manolo Rangel, and former forward José Eulogio Gárate, the forward took the microphone to address the fans at the Wanda Metropolitano.
"I would like to send a message of gratitude to many people, apologize in advance for those I don't mention, but there are many of you who have helped me achieve all this. I would like to start with those in the third tier", said Fernando Torres, referring to the deceased red-and-white followers.
Among them, he made a special reference to former player and coach Luis Aragonés, who passed away in 2014.
"We all owe him for showing us the way, for marking what Atlético Madrid is, and now, over the years, this group we have here has taken the baton and continues to make history, and I am sure that the best is yet to come", said the 'Niño'.
