Hamburg descended this Saturday after being in the top category of German football for 55 years and being the only founding team of the Bundesliga that had never been relegated to the second category.

The Dinosaurs could not save themselves despite the 2-1 victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach, in a match that ended with a shameful incident when a group of Hamburg ultras bombarded the opposing team's area with firecrackers.

However, the majority of Hamburg followers behaved calmly, despite the imminent relegation that many seemed to have already resigned themselves to.

The 4-1 victory of Wolfsburg against Cologne left Hamburg without options and now one of Germany's historic teams has to make plans for the second division.

In recent seasons, Hamburg had been flirting continuously with relegation, but in the past it was one of the great teams in Germany.

Hamburg has been Bundesliga champion six times, making it the fifth team that has won the league the most times behind Bayern, Nuremberg, Borussia Dortmund, and Schalke.

They were also European champions in 1983 and have a Cup Winners' Cup in their trophy cabinet, won in 1977. For a while, Hamburg was even seen as the second team in Germany. Players like Uwe Seller, Franz Beckenbauer towards the end of his career, Horst Hrubesch, and Felix Magath have played for the club.

The current president of Bayern, Uli Hoeness, saw Hamburg for a long time as his main competitor, or even the only one that had the necessary conditions to challenge the Bavarian club's hegemony.

However, at some point in the 90s Hamburg lost its way when it came to organization.

Attempts were made to save the crisis by following Bayern's model and bringing old club legends (Seller as president and Magath as coach) into positions of responsibility, but the experiment did not have the desired effect.
