Sweet Briar’s Benjamin claims national title
In eighth place after Day 1 of competition in the Cacchione Cup at the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association National Championship, Sweet Briar senior Makayla Benjamin had her work cut out for her.
On Saturday, Day 2 of the event in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, she pulled out her best performance, leapfrogging seven riders to win Sweet Briar’s first-ever national title in the event.
Benjamin beat out 23 others — the nation’s top riders who qualified thanks to their scores during the entire regular season and at their regional and zone competitions — over two days to win the Cacchione Cup.
The event scores riders based on performances over fences and on the flat.
Benjamin entered Day 2 of competition, which included the top 10 qualifiers from Day 1, with a score of 162, seven points behind leader Mollie Kowalchik.
She notched 83 points over fences, the third-highest score in the phase, and 79 on the flat on Day 1 before earning first in the final placing on Day 2.
Before Benjamin, two other Sweet Briar riders competed in the Cacchione Cup a total of three times at IHSA nationals. Previously, the best finish by a Sweet Briar rider was fourth place by Jodie Weber in 2006.
