The Mexican taekwondo team is working towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, so they will focus their mission on that goal. As a result, they are already considering sending an alternate team to the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla 2018.

"We know that for Conade and for the country, the main event is the Central American and Caribbean Games, but the Pan American Championships will distribute a greater number of points for the world and Olympic rankings," said the president of the Mexican Taekwondo Federation, Professor Raymundo Gonzalez.

He indicated that they have already started on the path to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, as taekwondo is a sport with an extensive program to earn the highest number of points for that objective.

Therefore, for the Pan American Championships, which are scheduled for July 11th to 13th, a competitive team will be taken, as it distributes 40 points, while the Central American Games (July 20th to 23rd) only offer 10 points.

He added that athletes from other countries have already started to climb the world rankings, and Mexico has fallen behind a bit, which is why it is important to participate in the Pan American Championships in the United States.

"Participation in the Pan American Championships opens up possibilities to directly qualify Mexico and seek to reach the five spots," he said.
