Google reveals Gmail's first redesign since 2013
The day has finally arrived! Google has revealed the first redesign of Gmail since 2013, with updates to its security system and offline functionality.
What Google did with Gmail was to restructure the email storage databases, unify three systems for message synchronization between devices, and update the computers hosting the service.
"This is a complete rewrite of our flagship product, the most used one," said Jacob Bank, director of product for Gmail, to Reuters.
Such wonder comes at a price. Google declined to specify the costs associated with the redesign. Only the company's financial directorate knows that half of the expense was allocated to equipment purchases to support the growing use of machine learning. This is with the aim of identifying unwanted emails and predicting which emails will be important to users.
