Yucatan fencer qualifies for the Central American and Caribbean Games
Merida, Yucatan, March 28th, 2018.- Yucatecan fencer, Alekxandra Echeverría Cabrera, specializing in saber, acquired her ticket to the Central American and Caribbean Games for the first time. The Games will take place this year in Barranquilla, Colombia from July 19th to August 3rd. She earned her spot in the national selection event held in Zacatecas where a total of 9 athletes from Yucatan participated.
The athlete, who is also an international judge of this sport, faced Kin Escamilla from Jalisco in the direct elimination round. Echeverría defeated Escamilla with a score of 15-9 to secure the third-place medal and her spot in the Mexican team.
She lost to Vanesa Infante from Nuevo León with a score of 15-11 and finally defeated Diana González from Colima with a final score of 15-6. With this result, she secured the bronze medal and her spot in the Central American Games.
Other competitors included José Peletiere in foil, finishing in fourth place, Jessica Méndez in the sword event, finishing in seventh place, Celia Correa in foil and Angel Valdéz in sabre, both finishing in eighth place, Gerardo Rojas in sabre, finishing in twelfth place, and Leandro Sauri in sword, finishing in eleventh place. Mauricio Peraza finished in eleventh place in sabre and Abigail Valdéz finished in tenth place in sabre.
Juan Sosa Puerto, director of the Institute of Sports, congratulated fencer Echeverría and encouraged her to continue training in order to bring good results from the Central American and Caribbean Games. The coach Angel Díaz Farfán was also present.
