What seemed to be a quiet public training session ended up sparking a war of statements between the team of Kazakhstani monarch Gennady Golovkin and Mexican boxer Saul "Canelo" Alvarez over accusations of doping. This came after Alvarez tested positive in a drug test, which he attributed to consuming contaminated meat.
However, the accusations from the owner of three of the top four international titles did not go unnoticed. Eric Gomez, President of Golden Boy Promotions, part of Alvarez's team, stated: "It seems like Golovkin is not a confident fighter. He has many insecurities. Canelo is a clean fighter and the facts prove it. It seems like GGG is trying to find a way out of the fight. If he wants it, he just has to say it," Gomez declared in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.
Currently, the May 5th fight depends entirely on the Nevada Athletic Commission and the decision made in the hearing, but the discomfort of the champion's team could have significant repercussions on whether the fight takes place or not.
"It seems like some states have preferences, providing preferential treatment to certain fighters... We will have to win more convincingly or knock him out," emphasized Abel Sanchez, Golovkin's trainer.
