A terrible attack took place in South Africa, where a triathlete was attacked by a gang. The group of vandals tried to cut off his legs with a saw in the city of Durban, in the northeast of this country.

The victim is Mhlengi Gwala, a recognized athlete in this city. The man was cycling when he was attacked by unknown individuals.

"He thought they wanted to steal and offered them his phone, watch, and bicycle. But that wasn't what they wanted. Two guys held him by the arms and chest, and another began to cut off one leg. They reached the bone but couldn't go any further, so they started cutting off the other leg," a friend of the athlete told a radio station.

Fortunately, "the saw was rusty," and the attackers fled at the sight of a police patrol, Mhlengi told one of his friends.

The athlete was injured and may lose one of his legs, although the surgeons who operated on him remain optimistic.
