Staci Slaughter, spokesperson for the San Francisco Giants, confirmed on Tuesday that Cepeda was hospitalized on Monday night, although she did not have more details about his condition.

Cepeda, 80, played 17 seasons in Major League Baseball, most of them with the Giants.

Selected seven times to the All-Star Game, "Peruchín" Cepeda won the National League Rookie of the Year award in 1958 and was the National League Most Valuable Player in 1967 with the St. Louis Cardinals. He retired with a batting average of .297, 397 home runs, and 1,365 runs batted in.

He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1999 by the Veterans Committee.
