Roger Federer is close to becoming the best in the world again. The Swiss will play in the Rotterdam Tournament this week, where he could reclaim the number 1 spot if he reaches the semifinals. To do this, he would have to face his compatriot Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals.
The winner of the Australian Open, Federer is only 155 points behind the number 1, his great rival Rafael Nadal, who had to retire due to injury in the quarterfinals of the first major of the year.
"Being able to reconquer this spot would be incredible. It's exciting to see Stan in my half of the draw and it's great that he's back (Wawrinka didn't compete in the second half of 2017 due to a knee surgery)," added Federer, winner of 20 Grand Slam titles.
"Playing for the number 1 spot is already great, no matter the opponent, but doing it against Stan would be like a Grand Slam final, a great match," continued the Swiss, who won in Rotterdam in 2005 and 2012.
If he achieves the number 1 spot for the first time since October 2012, Roger Federer will be the oldest ATP king at the age of 36, surpassing the American André Agassi, who was first at 33.
