David Gleirscher Wins Men's Luge Individual Olympic Gold Medal

Austrian David Gleirscher became the new Olympic champion in men's luge individual on Sunday by winning the event held at the PyeongChang Sliding Center, home to the 23rd edition of the Winter Games.

The 23-year-old Tyrolean won the competition with a total time of three minutes, ten seconds, and 702 milliseconds, just 26 milliseconds ahead of American Chris Mazdzer, who finished second. German Johannes Ludwig was 230 milliseconds slower than the winner and took the bronze medal.

Gleirscher's victory marked Austria's first medal at the PyeongChang Games and he became the country's first Olympic luge champion in exactly 50 years since Manfred Schmid won in Grenoble (France) for the last time.
