The hashtag '#BlackHistoryMonth2018' at the end of the tweet alludes to a tradition in the United States: every year, during one month, the role of African-Americans in the country's history is celebrated. This year, it is the month of February.

By adding this reference, the athlete opens the door to all interpretations, including racism.

The selection was made by the vote of the eight representatives of the United States winter sports federations, and in case of a tie, the decision was made by a coin toss.

Davis and Hamlin each received four votes before the coin decided the choice of the white female athlete, who won the first individual luge medal for the United States, a bronze in Sochi 2014.

"The flag bearer for Team USA is chosen through a detailed selection process, well known to the athletes," reiterated Mark Jones, spokesperson for the United States Olympic Committee (Usoc) in Pyeongchang on Friday.

Davis is one of three American athletes competing in Pyeongchang in their fifth Olympic Games, and he is the most decorated American athlete in the Winter Olympics (two silvers and two golds).
