The only place Mauricio Fiol feels at peace is in a swimming pool. He discovered it when he turned six years old and since then it has been his reason for being. However, this changed when he was suspended for testing positive for doping in the 2015 Pan American Games.

Two and a half years have passed since that news. And although he still cannot return to official tournaments, he has found a way to continue competing.

How did you decide to enter a reality TV show?
Two shows contacted me and I chose Combate. I think I can take advantage of the opportunity to promote sports. And also to gain exposure and fulfill my dreams.

What is your goal in Combate?
I want to be the best of the season. I have to work hard because some of the games are tough.

Have you received any criticism for this decision?
I know that other athletes have, but not me. People are supporting me. Still, I joined with a goal and not to create a scandal.

Do you plan on staying on television or going back to sports?
This is just a phase. The show will catapult me and help me continue with my preparation towards my goal: the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

How will the exposure on TV help you?
Economically. I spend a lot to cover my training expenses. Training like an elite athlete is expensive.

Do you think you are ready to compete again?
If I could take the qualifying test for Lima 2019 or Tokyo 2020 tomorrow, I know I would get a spot. I believe I could reach a final and, why not? Win a medal.

What will you do until then?
I want to break a Guinness World Record. In April, I plan to swim for 24 hours in a pool and complete 102 km. Swimming is my passion.
