Reopening of the Investigation on Match-Fixing Case in Spanish Football

After the temporary closure of the match-fixing case between Levante and Zaragoza in August, Isabel Rodríguez, judge of the 8th Instruction Court in Valencia, reopened the investigation, which means Javier Aguirre will have to go on trial.

In addition to the Mexican coach, 37 players who were involved in this situation in the 2011 season will also be tried in Valencia.

This investigation came after Zaragoza won 2-1 against Levante, securing their stay in the Spanish La Liga. The match supposedly involved Levante deliberately losing the game.

Furthermore, the Zaragoza players allegedly received money from the then-president Agapito Iglesias, which was never returned to the institution as it was intended for the Levante team.

The case was closed in 2017 due to insufficient evidence to prosecute the footballers and club officials.

The Valencia court decided to reopen the case due to the significant increase in expenses made by the Levante team during their vacations in 2011 compared to 2010, raising suspicions that it was the money received from the alleged match-fixing.
