Nick Foles threw a pass for Zach Ertz to score, which meant the lead with 2:21 minutes remaining, and the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New England Patriots 41-33 on Sunday, winning the Super Bowl for the first time in history.
Never before had two rivals in a postseason game accumulated so many yards combined. Paradoxically, the duel was defined with a defensive play, when Brandon Graham stripped the ball from Tom Brady. Derek Barnett recovered it with 2:09 minutes to play, setting the stage for a Jake Elliott field goal.
Tom Brady and the Pats, who a year ago had achieved an unprecedented comeback against the Atlanta Falcons, reversed a 12-point deficit this time, but couldn't complete the feat.
In the duel of high-powered offenses, Foles came out on top, a substitute quarterback who will be immortalized in Philadelphia after throwing for 373 yards and three touchdowns. To top it off, he caught a touchdown pass on a surprise play and on fourth down.
The Eagles hadn't been NFL champions since 1960, when the Super Bowl didn't exist. (D)
