The Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal, world No. 1 and main contender for the title, had to retire today from the Australian Open due to an injury that affected him in the middle of his quarterfinal match against Marin Cilic, who thus advanced to the semifinals of the first Grand Slam of the season, where he will face the American Kyle Edmund.

The Spanish player was affected by an injury in his right leg when the score was 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5), and 4-1 in favor of Cilic and they had been playing for three hours and 21 minutes. After the extended medical attention break, which lasted more than five minutes, Nadal lost the fourth set 6-2.
