James Harrison's Career Comes to an End

The career of James Harrison appears to be nearing its end. The former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker was released by the team last Saturday and entered the waiver wire. Despite his history, no franchise claimed him, and he became a free agent.

According to Adam Schefter, Harrison did not find a spot on any of the league's 32 teams, which means he will become a free agent according to the rules. The Steelers had already gone through this process with the veteran when they cut him in 2013, but back then he quickly found a new team with the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Steelers' move, however senseless it may seem, had a reason. The Pennsylvania team cut the 40-year-old player to make room on the roster and activate Marcus Gilbert, offensive tackle who was suspended by the NFL and will now reinforce the team's offense.

With Bud Dupree and T.J. Watt on defense, Harrison's role began to diminish. When the Steelers selected J.J. Watt's brother in the 2018 Draft, James said he would support and train him, understanding that the generational shift in the position was near. The number 92 is 40 years old and is the all-time leader in sacks for Pittsburgh with 80.5 in 15 years.
