NFL fines Seattle Seahawks for violating concussion protocol
In recent years, the NFL has tried to protect players and safeguard their physical integrity. The concussion protocol seeks to reduce the risk for athletes to prevent a greater problem. As a result, the league decided on Thursday to fine the Seattle Seahawks for not correctly following this process with Russell Wilson in Week 9.
The Seahawks' quarterback suffered a blow to the head that caused him to leave the field suddenly. Surprisingly, the player immediately returned to the field, despite what appeared to be a serious injury. Later, cameras captured the offensive leader spending seconds in the concussion evaluation campaign before returning to the game without proper review.
For failing to adhere to the concussion protocol, the NFL fined the team's coaches and medical staff $100,000. Additionally, they will have to attend an intensive course where they will be taught the techniques and resources that should be used when a player suffers a head injury. Wilson was hit in the chin by Karlos Dansby, and although he showed no signs of a concussion, the referee sent him for review.
"The results of the joint investigation determined that the protocol was triggered when Mr. Wilson was sent to the bench for evaluation after referee Walt Anderson concluded that a medical review was justified. However, the required evaluation was not conducted and Mr. Wilson was allowed to return to the game without assessment," the league stated.
For a player to return to practice or a game, it is necessary for a team doctor and an external doctor to determine their condition. The Seahawks did not follow this process, and only the organization's doctors gave the green light for him to continue participating in the match against the Arizona Cardinals.
