Hope Solo, former American goalkeeper, will seek to become the president of the Football Federation of her country.

Hope Solo will seek the presidency of the United States Football Federation.

The former goalkeeper of the United States women's team announced her candidacy Thursday night on Facebook, less than a week after Sunil Gulati announced that he will not seek re-election for a fourth term in charge following the men's team's failure in the World Cup qualifiers.

Solo, 36, played for the women's team that won the 2015 World Cup.

"I know exactly what the United States federation needs, I know exactly how to achieve it, and I have the strength to do it," Solo wrote. "I have always been willing to sacrifice for what I believe, and I believe there is no greater sacrifice than fighting for equality, integrity, and honesty, especially in an organization like the United States Football Federation, which can contribute much more to the communities in our country."

There are now nine candidates for the position, and she is the second woman to present her candidacy after the president of Soccer United Marketing, Kathy Carter.

Solo left the team after the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where the United States was eliminated by Sweden in the quarterfinals. The goalkeeper was suspended after that tournament for criticizing the Swedes, and she has not played for the team since. She played a total of 202 games for the national team, and did not allow goals in 102, a record for international football.

She has also been involved in several off-field controversies, including a case of domestic violence in 2014.
