A South African court on Friday increased the sentence for Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius to 13 years and 5 months in prison for the 2013 murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Judge Willie Seriti, of the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein, more than doubled the original six-year sentence imposed on the Paralympic athlete by the Pretoria court in 2016.

The prosecution had appealed this sentence to demand a harsher punishment, describing the first sentence as "scandalously inappropriate."

Prosecutors had argued earlier this month that Pistorius never showed true remorse after killing his girlfriend.

"One of the essential elements of a balanced sentence is that it must reflect the gravity of the crime," prosecutor Andrea Johnson told the court.

In the evening of February 13th to 14th, 2013, Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, who had locked herself in the bathroom, at his home.

He has always pleaded not guilty, claiming that he believed a thief had entered his property in Pretoria and shot him in a panic.

The athlete, nicknamed "Blade Runner," entered legend in London-2012, where he became the first amputee athlete to participate in the Olympic Games. (I)
