British motorcyclist Daniel Hegarty dies in Macao Grand Prix

Daniel Hegarty, a 31-year-old British motorcyclist, died today as a result of an accident in the Macao Grand Prix, a street circuit race held annually in the former Portuguese colony.

The rider, from the Top Gun Racing Honda team, lost control of his motorcycle when taking the so-called Fishermen's Bend, one of the tightest corners of the circuit, and crashed into the protective barriers, losing his helmet on impact and sustaining serious injuries.

The race organization, which confirmed the tragic incident, sent its "deepest condolences" to the family of the rider, a native of Nottingham.

After the accident, the red flag was waved and eventually the race was cancelled.

This is the second fatal accident that has occurred in the Macao Grand Prix - the only one in the world that combines motorcycle and car races on the same street circuit - since 2012, when Portuguese rider Luis Carreira died in the same corner.

Hegarty is also the sixteenth rider to die on the Macao circuit since its creation in 1954.
