George Springer: A Dream Come True
Ending the year with a celebration is one of the greatest experiences a baseball player can have, but doing so and being named the Most Valuable Player takes things to another level. George Springer fulfilled that unique dream for himself, his team, and the city of Houston.
"It's incredible, it's indescribable. When you arrive at Spring Training, you know what you have, you see what you have, and you have that thought of 'we can do it,' but it's 162 games and the playoffs, and a lot of things have to happen for everything to come together so that you can make it here," commented the World Series MVP.
Springer played as the leadoff batter for the Astros and finished the Fall Classic with five home runs, batting .379, with eight runs scored and seven runs batted in.
The outfielder, who also had several key defensive plays, explained that his individual success was supported by a team effort they developed throughout the long season.
"In our team, we all believed in each other. We did it in the good times and the bad times, in the negative streak in August, when we were down 3-2 against the Yankees," he explained. "Many things have to happen, and I am very happy to give the city and the team a title they deserved. This is a surreal feeling."
To win the title, the Astros had to go through a World Series that went to seven games and was decided in the opponent's stadium. The outcome was not as close as expected, as the game to clinch the title ended 5-1 and was decided early on.
"It was like a dogfight. It was a very tough series, with a lot of emotions, psychologically it was exhausting, but the difference between us was scoring early. We got ahead and didn't let them attack us. With that, we took control and didn't let go."
