German Sebastian Vettel, from Ferrari, achieved his 50th career pole position at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez and will start in the first position in the Mexican Grand Prix 2017, breaking Mercedes' dominance, who had taken that spot in the previous two years.

Vettel is the fourth driver with the most pole positions in the history of Formula One, behind British Lewis Hamilton, who has 72, German Michael Schumacher with 68, and Brazilian Ayrton Senna, who obtained 65.

"50 is a lot, I don't know what to say, it's a big number, before qualifying I didn't know it, so I'm surprised by the number, happy with the session we had, especially with the last lap, maybe more than reaching that milestone," said Seb, who set a fastest time of 1:16.488 minutes.

Dutch Max Verstappen, from Red Bull, had been the fastest with 1:16.524 in the second part of qualifying, but Vettel was able to surpass him in the last attempt in qualifying.

"Max was really fast in Q2, we all had to improve, with the altitude it's complicated, the circuit is slippery, it's easy to make a mistake, you have to be careful, but I knew if I had a good first sector I would have the opportunity and it worked, I was able to do it without losing time and push until the end, when I heard that I had the pole there was an explosion in the car, although different from yesterday's," joked Seb, referring to the fact that in the second practice the extinguisher of his car went off.

On his part, Verstappen regretted not being able to repeat his Q2 performance in the third part, to take his first career pole position.

"I did the same as in Q2, but the tires didn't adapt as well in Q3, it's difficult to understand," he explained.

British Lewis Hamilton, from Mercedes, who will start in the third position in the race where he can achieve his fourth Formula One title, admitted that he was far from the pace of Ferrari and Red Bull.

"It was a tough session, it has been like that the whole weekend, we had some issues on the track, but they (Vettel and Verstappen) did a great job, we are in the fight, and our long runs are better than the short ones," he stated confidently.
