Cristiano Ronaldo scores a hat-trick in the qualifiers and surpasses the King in goals for his national team.

Cristiano Ronaldo doesn't slow down for a minute.

The forward scored a hat-trick in Portugal's 5-1 victory over Faroe Islands, bringing the Portuguese team to 18 points in Group B of the UEFA World Cup Qualifiers for Russia 2018.

The Real Madrid player reached a total of 78 goals with the Portuguese shirt, with which he became the champion of the Euro Cup in June.

Breaking records

With this, Cristiano surpassed the 77 goals scored by Pelé with the Brazilian shirt. Iranian Ali Daei scored 109 goals, while Puskas scored 84 with Hungary, Kamamoto scored 80 with Japan, and Chitalu scored 79 with Zambia.

In addition, CR7 matched Pedja Mijatovic as the only European players with 14 goals in a single Qualification.

The striker opened the scoring with a stunning volley and added two more goals from a penalty and a free-kick, reaching 78 goals with Portugal and surpassing Pelé's 77, the Brazilian legend. The Real Madrid star also became the second highest scorer in the history of European national teams, six goals behind Hungarian Ferenc Puskas.

Switzerland, who maintained their perfect record in seven qualifiers with a 3-0 victory over Andorra, has 21 points, three more than Portugal, and has secured first or second place in the group. The leader automatically qualifies for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and the runner-up has to play a playoff.

In other results, Estonia drew 0-0 with Greece and Cyprus defeated Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-2. This made it easier for Belgium to now lead the group comfortably.

Switzerland gets closer

In a mere formality match, Switzerland prevailed 3-0 over Andorra thanks to a double by forward Haris Seferovic and a goal scored by Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner.

With this victory, the Swiss team takes first place in Group B with 21 points, surpassing the Portuguese team led by Cristiano Ronaldo, who emerged victorious against Faroe Islands with a score of 5-1 and reached 18 points.

Both teams are followed by Hungary, who are in third place with 10 points, after a 3-1 victory over Latvia, and Faroe Islands with 5 points.

Next Sunday, the last of the group, Latvia, will be responsible for hosting the leaders.
