Wayne Rooney announces retirement from international football

The 31-year-old English forward for Everton, Wayne Rooney, announced on Wednesday that he is retiring from playing for the national team. Rooney is the highest goal scorer for England with 53 goals in 119 matches.

The striker informed the national team manager, Gareth Southgate, about his decision over the phone. "After much thought, I have told Gareth that I am retiring from international football," the goal scorer stated in a statement published on his website.

The manager called Rooney, who lost his place and captaincy in the national team last season, to congratulate him on his start to the season with Everton, where he has scored in the first two matches, reaching his 200th goal in the Premier League on Monday.

"It was fantastic that Gareth Southgate called me to say that he wanted me back in the national team for the upcoming matches. I appreciate it," the player explained in his statement. However, Rooney declined the invitation.

"Leaving Manchester United was difficult, but I know that I made the right decision by returning to my home, Everton (which I left in 2004). Now I want to use all my energy to help them," he added.

"Playing for England has always been something very special to me. Every time I was selected, as a player or captain, it was a true privilege. But I believe the time has come to say goodbye," he concluded.

England will face Malta and Slovakia in the World Cup 2018 qualifiers in early December, which will be held in Russia. After six matches played, the Three Lions lead Group F.
