Valtteri Bottas wins Austrian Grand Prix
The Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) has won the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix, held at the Red Bull Ring. The Finn was joined on the podium by German Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) and Australian Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull), second and third respectively.
With rain threatening from the horizon to wet the Red Bull Ring and turn the race upside down, Valtteri Bottas managed to maintain the first position on the grid achieved in the qualifying. In fact, his reaction after the start lights went out was so fast that the stewards in Austria were forced to investigate whether he had jumped the start or it was all the result of some impressive reflexes, as they finally resolved.
In this race, Spanish driver Fernando Alonso (McLaren) retired from the competition in the first lap after being hit by the Toro Rosso of Russian Daniil Kvyat, and Carlos Sainz (Toro Rosso) did the same in lap 46 due to engine problems. Despite the complicated scenario, Valtteri Bottas dominated the race from start to finish and managed to withstand Vettel's attack in the end. The winner started from first position and maintained his place throughout the 71 laps on the Spielberg circuit.
In this way, Valtteri Bottas has achieved his second victory at a time when Mercedes needed his expertise to minimize the damage caused by Lewis Hamilton, who is already twenty points behind Vettel in the fight for the World Drivers' Championship.
