The 19-year-old player scored four goals in the U-20 World Cup held in South Korea. He was one of the key players for Venezuela to achieve the historic runner-up position, only losing to England. His time at Caracas FC was counted, as several clubs were interested in signing him.

Sergio Córdova will become the fourth Venezuelan footballer to play in the Bundesliga, following Juan Arango (Borussia Monchengladbach), Tomás Rincón (Hamburg), and Yohandry Orozco (Wolfsburg).
"The Bundesliga is a great challenge for me and I am very grateful to the club for giving me confidence and the opportunity for this new challenge. I want to establish myself here as quickly as possible in order to help the team achieve its goals," said the Venezuelan, who will be linked to the German club until June 2022.
