Tiger Woods apologizes for DUI arrest

American golfer Tiger Woods apologized on Monday for his arrest for allegedly driving under the influence, but said alcohol had nothing to do with the incident.

In a statement to USA Today, Woods, who was arrested by the police in Florida in the early hours of Monday, blamed the incident on a bad reaction to prescribed medications.

"I understand the gravity of what I did and take full responsibility for my actions," Woods said in the statement. "I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved," added the former world number one.

"What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications. I didn't realize that the mix of medications had affected me so strongly," added the 41-year-old player.

"I would like to apologize from the bottom of my heart to my family, friends, and fans. I expect more from myself," he added.

The fourteen-time winner of 'Grand Slam' tournaments was arrested by the police in the early hours of Monday near his home in Jupiter, Florida.

It was reported at 10:50 am according to police records, with a mugshot showing the unshaven golfer.

The traffic incident occurred around 3:00 am (local time), said Jupiter Police Department spokeswoman Kristin Rightler.
