Huddersfield Town Promoted to the Premier League
Huddersfield Town has been promoted to the Premier League, the top division of English football, after defeating Reading 4-3 on penalties.
Penalties were necessary after the teams drew 0-0 in both regulation time and extra time, in a match held at Wembley Stadium in London.
The victory puts Huddersfield in the highest category of English football for the first time since 1972.
"This has nothing to do with a dream, this is reality," said German player Michael Hefele to Sky Sports.
"These guys have achieved something so great, for such a small team to be in the best league in the world. It's insane," he added.
It was the second consecutive time that Huddersfield won on penalties, after defeating Sheffield in the promotion playoffs.
Newcastle and Brighton, who finished first and second in the championship, respectively, gained automatic promotion to the Premier League.
"It's a great achievement for all of us," expressed forward Izzy Brown. "To do it twice on penalties is amazing."
"You can see every day how hard we work, each player gives 100 percent and I believe we've shown throughout the season that we deserve this," he added.
The victory caps off a great recovery for Huddersfield, who finished between 16th and 19th in the second division in the past four seasons.
The "Terriers" are also the first team in the history of English football to reach the Premier League with a negative goal difference, finishing fifth in the regular season with -2.
