Under the slogan #ACityUnited, which plays with the names of the teams and with the meaning - "a united city" - the Premier League clubs stated in a joint statement that they will make the donation to the "We Love Manchester" Foundation, created by the Red Cross after the attack.

"Our clubs are at the heart of the local community in Manchester and it is our duty to present a unified response to the tragedy," said United's executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward.

"We have all been proud of the strength and solidarity shown by the people of Manchester since the attack," said City's president, Khaldoon Al Mubarak.

A terrorist detonated himself on Monday night in the foyer of the Manchester Arena at the end of a concert by singer Ariana Grande. 22 people, including several children and teenagers, were killed and 59 others were injured.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, allegedly carried out by Salman Abedi, a 22-year-old British man of Libyan descent.
