The Uruguayan footballer Guillermo Varela was fired today from Eintracht Frankfurt because the infection he suffered in a recent tattoo was going to prevent him from playing in the German Cup final on Saturday.
"Guillermo's path with Eintracht Frankfurt has separated after this. The club cannot tolerate a player defying the coach's and the doctors' instructions before such an important match," said the German club's sports director, Fredi Bobic, today.
The executive described the player's decision as very reckless and criticized his behavior as "clearly wrong." Varela, disregarding the club's coach Niko Kovac's instructions, got a tattoo on Monday which subsequently got infected.
Due to the complication and in order to ensure proper healing, the defender was advised against sports activities.
Varela arrived in Germany last summer on loan for one year from Manchester United. Although the German club initially considered the possibility of extending the Uruguayan's loan, his behavior has completely ruled out this possibility.
"This, of course, is no longer considered," admitted Bobic. In addition to the immediate suspension the player has been subjected to, there will also be a financial penalty.
"The fact that he has harmed the team with such selfish behavior forces us to take this measure," concluded the German Bundesliga club's sports director.
Eintracht Frankfurt will play the German Cup final against Borussia Dortmund this Saturday. The match will take place at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
