Aaron Hernández wrote a mention of a biblical passage with ink on his forehead and with blood on the wall of his cell before hanging himself with a sheet, the state police reported on Thursday.
The former New England Patriots tight end was found on March 19 in the Souza-Baranowski prison, where he was serving a life sentence for the death of Odin Lloyd, a former minor league football player, which occurred in 2003. Lloyd was dating the sister of Hernandez's girlfriend. His suicide occurred five days after he was acquitted of two other homicides, which occurred in 2012.
The report released by the state police states that verse 3:16 of the Gospel of John was written on Hernandez's forehead and on the wall of the cell.
The verse reads: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
The report, prepared by a state police detective assigned to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr., said a prison guard found Hernandez around 3 a.m.
Guards found a cardboard insert in Hernandez's cell door to prevent it from being opened. Hernandez also spread a copious amount of shampoo on the floor to make it slippery, according to the report.
Once the guards were able to enter the cell, they found Hernandez naked and hanging from a sheet that had been tied to the window bars. Guards and medical personnel attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but Hernandez never regained consciousness. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The state police mentioned that Hernandez's middle finger had a freshly made cut and blood on the adjacent fingers. In addition to the biblical verse written on his forehead, a large bloodstain was found on each of his feet.
