Defeats hurt, but you have to know how to turn the page and work to keep improving. Throughout his career, Juan Pablo Varillas has shown us his ability to recover from adverse results. That's how he has reached a high level in tennis. This Friday, he lost to Albert Ramos-Viñolas in the quarterfinals of the Gstaad ATP , but we trust that he will have his revenge sooner rather than later. Peru's top racket was eliminated from the competition in a match in which he started very well (he won a hard-fought first set, 7-6), but he couldn't maintain his aggressiveness and was eventually surpassed by his Spanish colleague.

The Roy Emerson Arena enjoyed the intensity of the first set: 'Juanpi' took the lead, but Ramos recovered with three consecutive games, including a break, putting himself 4-2 ahead. Then there was a brief exchange of winning shots, where the national athlete won to recover the break and take a 6-5 lead.

The opponent forced the tiebreak and, in the tiebreak, Juan Pablo took advantage of his only set point to make it 7-2 and win the first set of the match (7-6). It wasn't easy, but the Peruvian showed that he was going to fight for every point until the end, as he has always done. However, he looked unrecognizable in the second set and was overpowered: it ended 6-1 in Albert's favor.

The start of the third set was completely different from the previous one: this time, 'Juanpi' started leading on the scoreboard. Then, Ramos managed to win three consecutive games. They were 4-5 in favor of the Spanish. Varillas had recovered from the 6-1 and was about to level the match, but Albert sealed the third set with a clear 6-4, confirming his pass to the semifinals of the tournament in Switzerland.

With this defeat - and elimination - from the Gstaad ATP, Juan Pablo Varillas' next challenge will be the Hamburg ATP 500. Then he will have to focus on preparing on hard court for his first appearance in the US Open main draw. One door has closed, but he still has many more to go through. It's time to quickly recover from this fall and think about what's to come.

Pablo Arraya dedicated some words to Varillas

Pablo Arraya, a legend of national tennis, dedicated a message to Juan Pablo Varillas after his defeat in the Gstaad ATP. "Varillas had opportunities in the match. He has improved a lot and played very well, but the Spaniard was very tough with his forehand. A great athlete gets up tomorrow and starts all over again. I have a lot of confidence in him, more than ever. Let's go!", he pointed out.
