On Wednesday, May 10th, our national tennis player, Juan Pablo Varillas, was eliminated in the first round of the Rome Masters 1000. His opponent was none other than the Argentine Sebastian Báez, who won 7-5 and 6-3 to secure his spot in the next stage of the tournament.

The match was marked by intensity and parity between both players, but the Argentine tennis player stood out, who, as the favorite, managed to deliver precise hits at key moments of the match.

Despite being ranked 40th in the world, Báez had difficulties in the first set when Varillas broke his serve in the ninth game. However, far from being affected by the Peruvian's performance, the Argentine showed his character and managed to recover Varillas' next two serves, thus winning the first set of the match.

In the second set, Báez was close to losing the first game, but he managed to save two break points that gave him the necessary confidence to position himself with a 3-1 lead. Varillas did not give up and managed to break back, bringing the score to 4-3 against him but with the serve.

Nevertheless, the Argentine frustrated any attempt for surprise with a solid game when returning and placed the score at 5-3, paving the way towards victory. In the second round, Báez will face the Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor, who is ranked 36th.

More South American representatives at the Rome Masters 1000

The 23-year-old, Tomás Martín Etcheverry, secured victory against Frenchman Luca Van Assche with a score of 7-6 (7) and 6-3, which will pit the Argentine tennis player against the world number one, Novak Djokovic, in the next round of the tournament.

In another South American clash, Chilean Christian Garín had to give his all to defeat Pedro Cachín with scores of 6-4, 3-6, and 7-6 (5); a match that came close to lasting three hours, with only an eight-minute difference.

Unfortunately, Argentine tennis player Juan Manuel Cerúndolo did not have the same luck at the Rome Masters 1000. Cerúndolo lost in three sets, with scores of 6-1, 1-6, and 4-6, against Frenchman Arthur Fils on Court 4 of the tournament.
