Varillas achieved one of the biggest upsets in the quarterfinals and reached the semifinals of an ATP Tour tournament for the first time in his career by defeating Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the third seed.
The top-ranked Peruvian entered the Buenos Aires tournament through qualifying and celebrated the biggest success of his career at the expense of Musetti (20th), whom he defeated 6-4, 6-4 in a great match that lasted an hour and 46 minutes.
"I am very happy to reach my first semifinal in an ATP tournament, it has been an incredible few days, and I am playing great tennis. I started to impose my game, I felt that I had the level to be in this type of tournament and be a protagonist," said Varillas.
In the Saturday semifinals, he will face British player Cameron Norrie, the second seed and 12th in the rankings, who defeated Etcheverry (82nd) with scores of 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 in a match played under changing weather conditions, with two interruptions due to rain, the first at the end of the first set, and the second when the third set was underway.
