Rybakina Registers Fighting Win over Collins
Danielle Collins had reached the Australian Open final last season but then again Rybakina was the Wimbledon winner. It was expected to be a close clash as a result with the bookmakers siding Rybakina because of Collins’ absences from the tour because of fitness concerns.
Rybakina was on court for two hours and 23 minutes and needed to come back from a set down before registering a three-set victory over Collins.
The world number 21 was broken once in the first set and then again in the third but by then she had already taken a 5-1 lead over her opponent.
What was remarkable to watch was Rybakina creating 17 breaking opportunities in the match. She converted only four of them – two in each of the final two sets – to clinch the second round berth, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.

Kostyuk Struggles Past Fourlis
Jaimee Fourlis had a wildcard to the event but having never been ranked better than 147th in the world, she started off a whopping 23/5 to cause an upset against Kostyuk.
The 69th-ranked Kostyuk, however, made heavy weather of winning their encounter, only edging her Aussie opponent in three. She won 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in a match lasting two hours and 23 minutes.
Kostyuk, who had made the third round at Australian Open last year and was a semifinalist in Granby in her two best showings in hard court tournaments, was quickly off the blocks in the first set.
In the second, however, she lost her serve twice to surrender the lead. Kostyuk then needed to overcome a first game break before sealing off the tie with a decisive break in the sixth game.
Things can be expected to get a lot tougher against Rybakina, who looked like she was in a roaring touch first up.
