Rafael Nadal will play in the Roland Garros final for the fourteenth time. He has played 13 and won them all, the first one in 2005 against Argentine Mariano Puerta, and the last one against Novak Djokovic in 2020. He also aims to win his 22nd Grand Slam title, which would extend his lead over Roger Federer (20) and Djokovic (20) as the most successful player in history.
But the passage to the final had a bitter side: the withdrawal of German Alexander Zverev due to an injury in his right ankle, which made him leave the court in crutches and in tears, when the score was 1-0 in favor of Nadal and 6-6 in the second set.
"It was a great challenge to play against Zverev. For me, it's a difficult situation. Being in another Roland final is a dream come true. But to end like this, seeing Zverev cry and walking onto the court with crutches, is really tough," said 'Rafa', who became the second oldest tennis player to reach a Roland Garros final at 36 years old. The first was Bill Tilden, at 37, in 1930.
The opponent of Nadal will be Norwegian Casper Ruud, who defeated Croatian Marin Cilic 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, and 6-2, one of the players with the best performance on clay court and seeking to achieve the first Grand Slam title of his career. In his resume, he has eight ATP titles, the last one being the Geneva Tournament in Switzerland in May of this year.
