This Sunday, the Pan American Games came to an end. And they left us with more than one record, figure, and curious fact. Below, we present Lima 2019 in numbers.
- 3028 medals were awarded in Lima 2019, including those in team sports: 419 gold, 419 silver, and 523 bronze.
- A world record was broken by Brady Ellison (USA) in the individual recurve archery event with 702 points, surpassing the mark of 700 points set by Kim Woojim (KOR) at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
- 31 out of 41 countries won at least one medal, with the gold and bronze medals from the British Virgin Islands and Aruba standing out. These were the first medals ever won by their countries in Pan American history.
- Gymnast Evita Griskenas (USA) won five medals individually, making her the most successful athlete of the 18th edition of the Pan American Games. She won four gold medals in the ball, hoop, ribbon, and individual all-around events, and a bronze medal in the clubs event.
- Brazil has completed 17 consecutive podium finishes in Pan American handball between 1987, in both men's and women's categories, until Lima 2019. The women's event was not held in Havana in 1991.
- 69 Pan American records were broken in Lima 2019: 17 in archery, 15 in shooting, 14 in weightlifting, 13 in athletics, 7 in swimming, and 3 in track cycling.
- Peru finished first in surfing, a discipline introduced in the Lima 2019 Games, winning seven medals: three gold, three silver, and one bronze. This was the first time they finished at the top of a sport at the Pan American Games.
- The United States brought 621 athletes and secured first place at the Pan American Games. They won 293 medals: 119 gold, 89 silver, and 85 bronze.
- The United States has won 17 consecutive editions of the Pan American Games since 1955 when they triumphed in Mexico City, until the 2019 edition in Lima.
- Argentina won once, in 1951 in Buenos Aires, the only country that has ever beaten the United States in the overall medal tally.
- Bolivia won a gold medal in racquetball by teams, its first gold in Pan American Games history. Prior to Toronto, they had only won two silver medals and six bronze medals.
- It is estimated that one billion people watched the opening and closing ceremonies of Lima 2019 worldwide.
- Dominica brought two athletes, making it the country with the smallest delegation.
- For at least five hours each day on July 26 and August 11, those one billion viewers were connected with Peru, getting to know its enormous cultural legacy.
