Swiss Tennis Federation announces Wawrinka's withdrawal from Rio 2016 Olympics
The Swiss Tennis Federation has informed on Tuesday that Stan Wawrinka will not take part in the tennis tournament of the 2016 Rio Olympics due to a back injury.
Wawrinka's withdrawal adds to his compatriot Roger Federer's, who will not be able to play for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury.
Stan Wawrinka and Federer won the gold medal in the doubles tournament at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Now, Switzerland will only be represented in the tennis tournaments of Rio 2016 by Martina Hingis and Timea Bacsinszky.
Bacsinszky will compete in the women's singles and will also play in the doubles with Martina Hingis.
Stan Wawrinka is ranked fourth in the world and was the winner of the 2014 Australian Open and the 2015 French Open. In Beijing 2008, he reached the second round, and in London 2012, he was eliminated in the first round.
