La ex voleibolista peruana, Cecilia Tait, remembered as "the golden lefty", was chosen as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), a position she will hold for four years. Michelle Yeoh, the first Asian woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress and former squash player, was also elected.

Other athletes chosen were Yael Arad, Israeli judoka, Balazs Fürjes, Hungarian sports leader, Michael Mronz, sports event organizer, and Mehrez Boussayene, head of the Tunisian Olympic Committee.

Petra Sorling, President of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), and Kim Jae Youl, President of the International Skating Union (ISU), were also elected by the Committee.

The IOC members will make decisions about the selection of Olympic Games venues or sports programs.

Golden Era

Cecilia Tait is part of the historic Peruvian volleyball team that was runner-up in the 1982 World Championship and won the silver medal at the Seoul '88 Olympics, the same year she was recognized as the tournament's best player. In 1998, she became a congresswoman with the Peru Possible party.
