New York -
The reigning champions Naomi Osaka and Novak Djokovic will be the top seeds in the singles draws of the US Open.
Osaka, who defeated Serena Williams in last year's final to win her first Grand Slam title, recently regained the number one spot in the WTA rankings, displacing Ash Barty. In Flushing Meadows, Barty will be the second seed, followed by Karolina Pliskova, Wimbledon champion Simona Halep, and Elina Svitolina.
Williams is ranked eighth in the tournament, according to the announcement made on Wednesday by the United States Tennis Association.
Djokovic, seeking his second consecutive major title, will be followed by Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, both former champions in New York. Dominic Thiem will be the fourth seed and rising star Daniil Medvedev, who won the Cincinnati title last week, will be the fifth seed.
Argentinians Guido Pella and Diego Schwartzman are seeded 19th and 20th, respectively. Pella reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
In addition, Chilean Cristian Garín is ranked 31st.
The draw will take place on Thursday and the main draw action will begin on Monday. (D)
