SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. - Tiger Woods will likely have the opportunity to spend more time on his yacht this weekend after another round of losses at the U.S. Open on Friday, which means he is heading towards a missed cut.

Woods, who opened the tournament with a 78 on Thursday at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, was in position to play the weekend through nine holes of the second round before making a mess of the par-4 10th hole (his first hole Friday), where he made a double-bogey 6 after making a 7 there on Thursday.

That lone hole, a 400-yard par 4, cost Woods 5 shots, which ultimately is the difference in not playing the weekend.

Woods shot 72 on Friday and finished at 150-10 over par. The projected cut when he finished was at 7, though it could move higher. He ended up 14 shots behind leader Dustin Johnson.

A missed cut would be Woods' second of the year in 10 events and his eighth overall as a professional in major championships. It would be his third in the U.S. Open, following missed cuts in 2006 and 2015. For his career, Woods arrived at the U.S. Open having missed only 18 cuts worldwide, 17 on the PGA Tour as a pro.

The 14-time major champion, who is playing his first U.S. Open since 2015 because of back issues, has his yacht, Privacy, parked in a nearby marina. His next tournament is in two weeks at the Quicken Loans National outside Washington, D.C.

This is the 40th major championship since Woods' last major title in the 2008 U.S. Open, and he has played in only 26 of them due to injury. He has had nine top-10 finishes and now seven missed cuts. Woods last contended in a major during the 2003 Open at Muirfield, where he tied for sixth.
