Great Mexican Athletes You Should Know About
Mexico has great athletes who have excelled internationally but often go unnoticed by the general public. These athletes may not have as much spotlight as some other professionals, but they have achieved great feats that have brought honor to our country.
Elisa López
One of the best athletes in vertical races (or Towerrunning). Recently, the Mexican finished sixth in a competition that involved climbing the 1,665 steps of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. She accomplished this feat in a time of 11 minutes and 50 seconds, earning her sixth place in the competition.
Elisa has climbed various buildings around the world, such as the Shanghai Tower IVM, Vertical Marathon held in China, where she climbed 119 floors (3,398 steps) and achieved fourth place.
She is now preparing for the Towerrunning World Championship, which will take place in Taipei on May 5th, where she will participate in two heats and will have to climb 35 floors and then 91 floors, which is equivalent to 2,042 steps.
Donovan Carrillo
Recently, the Mexican skater had an excellent performance at the World Figure Skating Championship, where he finished in 22nd place with a score of 200.76.
Carrillo, one of the best exponents of this discipline in Mexico, captivated the audience with his performance, which features Juan Gabriel's song 'Hasta que te conocí' and has already become his trademark.
Natalia Botello
The recent winner of the National Sports Award in the non-professional category, Natalia is one of the most promising fencers in Mexican fencing.
Despite being under 15 years old, Botello already has an enviable trajectory, which includes the Youth World Championship in the sport. She is considered one of the strong bets for the Mexican delegation at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Jonathan Paredes
The recent winner of the High Diving World Championship is one of the most outstanding Mexican athletes of recent times. However, the native of Naucalpan has not received the National Sports Award for his achievements.
"I consider myself worthy of the award since I was nominated, not receiving it hasn't made me a better or worse person. I consider myself the same and I'm dedicating myself to what I have to do. It's true that the spotlight would turn to what I do, but I don't really need it in my life," he declared on March 7th to La Afición.
This has not stopped the Mexican diver, who will seek to retain his title in Cliff Diving.
Adriana Jiménez
Like Natalia Botello, Adriana is a winner of the National Sports Award in the non-professional category, but she is not yet recognized for her career in the popular sector.
This has not stopped the Mexican high diver, who won the silver medal at the World Swimming Championship in Budapest 2017 and won bronze in the last season of Cliff Diving.
Women's Rugby
The Mexican women's rugby team made history in November 2017 by securing an unprecedented spot in the World Cup in San Francisco, as well as a qualification to the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla.
The coveted spot was achieved after defeating Trinidad and Tobago with a score of 5-0, becoming champions in the Rugby Americas North Sevens 2017, a qualifying tournament for the aforementioned competitions.
The Rugby World Cup will be held from July 20-22 at the AT&T Park Stadium.
