Roger Federer wins his first match in the Australian Open

The Swiss player Roger Federer, ranked number 2 in the world, began his journey in the Australian Open with a clear victory over Slovenian Aljaz Bedene; 6-3, 6-4 and 6-3.

Federer, the defending champion, only needed one hour and 40 minutes at the Rod Laver Arena to eliminate the 51st ranked player in the world.

"I've thought a lot about what happened last year, because it was my favorite tournament of the entire season. I hope to do well again, although I don't know if I can match last year's performance, because it was too good," said Federer.

The 36-year-old Swiss player once again dismissed himself as a title favorite, which would mark his 20th Grand Slam: "I'm one year older and the young guys are coming up, I can't control it, last year was last year... it could be the favorite year of my career. I'll keep working and we'll see what happens in the end."

"My dream is to keep playing for a long time. I hope I can, at least a little longer," he added.

With this victory, Federer increased his record in Australia, where he has competed for the 19th time, to 88 wins and 13 losses. He has won the title five times.

In the next round, he will play against German Jan-Lennard Struff.
