Prior to the friendly basketball match between a local team and the Durango Eagles, former NBA player Horacio Llamas delivered a speech to children, young people, and adults at the Luis L. Vargas Gymnasium, encouraging them to practice this sport more.
The Sinaloan was the first Mexican to play in the NBA with the Phoenix Suns, where he arrived in 1996. With his 2.10 meters tall, he impressed the children and young people who attended the talk, highlighting the physical qualities of the people from the Comarca Lagunera to play this sport.
Horacio was very happy with the presence of basketball in the new generations.
"I am very happy with the treatment I have received. I was in Durango participating in activities for three days, and I gladly came here. I am close friends with Cristian Mijares, and Mayor Leticia Herrera invited me to give a talk and witness this exhibition match, to interact with children and young people who are starting to play basketball," Llamas mentioned.
He commented that these activities are very important to him, as he can share part of his experience more deeply in this way.
"I enjoy being able to share with these generations. It has always been practiced, but there is a lack of follow-up, a process that children must have to continue improving. The foundation is childhood, we must guide and motivate them to continue playing this sport, mold and educate them, make them accustomed to work every day," he said.
Horacio was pleased with the presence he continues to have in the new generations. "I think it's because their parents tell them about me or mention me, but it feels nice. But I feel even better when young people tell me that they will give their all, that they want to achieve what I achieved. That is what fills me the most, seeing their enthusiasm. We want to see more Mexicans in the NBA," he added.
