US Open organizers announced that Rafael Nadal, who recently regained the number one spot in the ATP rankings, will be the first seed in the last Grand Slam of the year. This will be the third time he has been placed in this position (2008 and 2010).
In the women's division, the first seed will be the world number one, Karolina Pliskova from the Czech Republic, followed by Simona Halep; while the third seed is Garbiñe Muguruza.
The great absentees from this tournament are Novak Djokovic, Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic, and Stanislas Wawrinka, the current champion of the tournament who will not be able to defend his crown. Among the women, Serena Williams will also be absent due to her pregnancy.
