Maria Sharapova makes victorious return in Stanford
Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova, who had been away from the circuit since last May due to a left leg injury, claimed a triumphant debut at the Stanford tennis tournament (United States) by defeating American Jennifer Brady in her first round match.
The 30-year-old player from Nyagan won 6-1, 4-6 and 6-0 in her first official match on American soil since the 2015 Miami Open. "The welcome I have received from the fans has been incredible. Right now, I feel like hugging everyone," joked Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova.
After missing out on clay and grass tournaments for the past two months due to a muscle injury, Maria Sharapova is confident of finding a winning streak on hard courts, the surface on which the US Open will be played between August 28 and September 10.
"The more matches I play, the better I will be. That's the goal," said Maria Sharapova, who received a wildcard invitation from the organization to compete in Stanford.
Her opponent in the second round will be Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko, the seventh seed and the eliminator of Spanish player Lara Arruabarrena.
