Sam Querrey does it again
American player Sam Querrey eliminated the world number one, British player Andy Murray, in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. For the first time in his career, Querrey has reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament.
But the taste of victory (3-6, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-1, and 6-1) on this stage is not new for the North American player, as he also defeated the world's best player at this tournament last year.
Novak Djokovic came to London the previous season holding all the major titles. He had won Wimbledon and the US Open in 2015, as well as Australia and Roland Garros that year, making him seem unbeatable.
However, in the third round, Querrey surprised him and defeated him in four sets (7-6 (6), 6-1, 3-6, and 7-6 (5)), knocking him out of the grass major and putting an end to his streak. Djokovic hasn't won a Grand Slam since then.
"It gave me a lot of confidence, so even when I'm not playing at my best, I have that mental strength to fight in tough matches," commented Querrey about that victory. Sam was eliminated in the quarterfinals of that edition of Wimbledon by Canadian player Milos Raonic.
But this year in Acapulco, Querrey repeated a story in which he played the villain. He became the champion of the Mexican Open by defeating four ATP Top 20 players.
He started with Belgian player David Goffin, then defeated the 2016 champion, Austrian player Dominic Thiem, followed by Australian player Nick Kyrgios. In the final, he caused the first defeat of Spanish player Rafael Nadal in the tournament.
By winning against Murray in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, Querrey has completed the cycle, and there will be a new champion of the tournament. Surprises don't scare Querrey.
