Dustin Johnson becomes first golfer to sweep four world tournaments

Dustin Johnson became the first golfer to sweep the series of four world tournaments on Sunday, with a formidable week that included an unexpected dose of drama in the Match Play.

Johnson withstood Jon Rahm's onslaught when the 22-year-old Spanish golfer failed to get a birdie on the 18th hole.

Johnson's 1-up victory capped a week in which he was never behind in his seven matches, reaffirming his status as the number one golfer. He led in 105 of the 112 holes he played.

This was the American golfer's third consecutive victory, making history by winning all four world tournaments.

He only needed the Match Play and did not let it slip away at the Austin County Club. He had previously won the Mexico Championship, the Bridgestone Invitational, and the HSBC Champions.

In Sunday's semifinals, Johnson defeated Japanese golfer Hideto Tanihara, and Rahm beat American golfer Bill Haas.

But Rahm made Johnson sweat in the final match on Sunday with his bold determination.

Johnson was leading by four strokes with six holes to play when the Spanish rookie took a risk with his driver. He cleared a lake and left the ball on the green of the 13th hole, making a birdie there. He added another birdie on the 15th and then managed to sink a ball between trees on the 16th, winning the hole by making a birdie from about nine meters away.

Rahm's retaliation against Johnson, who had stopped him in Mexico City three weeks ago, ended in the same way.

"It's been a tough and endless day," Johnson admitted. "I'm proud of my game and how I was able to resist."
